ChampagneGolden

Golden South Sea pearls grow in the gold-lipped form of the Pinctada maxima oyster. Their color ranges from pale champagne to deep gold (GIA). They share everything else with white South Sea pearls: large sizes, thick nacre, a soft satiny glow and long growing times.

Champagne to deep gold

The paler end of the range is often sold as champagne. The deeper, more saturated golds are the ones people pay most attention to, and also the ones most worth checking for treatment.

Natural or dyed?

Dyed golden South Sea pearls are difficult to identify, so it is sensible to ask for lab documentation (Jewelry Business). GIA's labs can separate natural-color from treated-color pearls; their X-ray and other tests are described in how labs test pearls.

Size and growth

Like white South Sea pearls, golden ones are typically 8 to 18 mm, grow one to an oyster and often take 2 to 4 years (GIA).
