The Perfect Pearls

Pearl shapes

GIA lists seven basic pearl shapes in three groups: spherical (round, near-round), symmetrical (button, drop, oval) and asymmetrical (semi-baroque, baroque). See each one rendered in Pearl Studio.

The seven shapes

Shape Group Good for
Round Spherical Classic strands and studs
Near-round Spherical Strands and studs at a lower price
Button Symmetrical Studs, where the flat back sits against the ear
Drop Symmetrical Drop earrings and pendants
Oval Symmetrical Pendants and earrings
Semi-baroque Asymmetrical Everyday strands with character
Baroque Asymmetrical Statement pieces

Groups from GIA. Spherical pearls are the most valued, and symmetrical drops are also sought after (GIA).

Baroque is not "bad"

A baroque pearl with strong luster and a clean surface can be more beautiful than a dull round one. See baroque pearls.
