The differences
- Both are real pearls grown inside a mollusk. A natural pearl forms with no human help; a cultured pearl starts when a person places a bead or tissue inside (FTC).
- Natural pearls are rare because natural pearl beds were overharvested; cultured pearls now dominate sales (GIA).
- You cannot tell them apart by eye. GIA uses X-ray microradiography, and sometimes micro-CT, to see the internal structure.
- Sellers must say a pearl is cultured: the FTC Jewelry Guides cover misuse of the word "pearl" and of terms like "natural" and "real".
